Artist: Jean Michel JarreAlbum: Magnetic FieldsGenres: Melodic space music,
Abstract electronic,
CinematicJean Michel Jarre was among the first few who used the digital Fairlight sampler and soundstation. Magnetic Fields is more earthbound that it's predecessors, with a significant development in sound design. One or two catchy melodies, but also magnificent sequencer work, especially in the 17-minute part 1. The arrival of sampled sound is signalled here, can you spot the printing press, or the train?
Jean Michel Jarre is one of the world's most popular electronic music artists, with over 80 million albums sold. He rocketed to international fame in 1976-77 with the 15-million selling Oxygene, which still remains the biggest selling French album of all times. Since then he has composed several studio albums of varying concepts, such as the sampling masterpiece Zoolook (1984) or the techno-rock-symphony Chronologie (1993). Jarre also puts on spectacular concerts that often uses unusual outdoor locations as the stage, such as the Houston skyline, the pyramids of Egypt, Paris' Eiffel Tower, the Forbidden City in Beijing or the Sahara desert in Marocco. Jarre is a UNESCO goodwill ambassador since 1993.
