1998 was the year of remixes and techno for Jean Michel Jarre; several famous DJs and producers were given tracks from his 1997 album Oxygene 7-13 to remix, and the result was Odyssey through O2, a continuous flow of trance, house, breakbeats and ambient techno from artists such as DJ Cam, Hani, Sunday Club, Tetsuya Komuro, Claude Monnet, Takkyu Ishino, Apollo 440, Resistance D and Loop Guru. Jarre contributes with special transitional tracks, where he reads poetry!
The album also contains a computer programme, Jarkaos, a trimmed version of the Arkaos software used by Jarre to create live visuals for his concerts. Jarkaos allows users to manipulate visuals using their computer keyboard while listening to the album, however the sofwtare will not work recent computers.
On July 14, 1998 Jarre also created Electronic Night, a remix-performance, techno festival and multimedia concert in front of the Eiffel Tower, with updated and remixed versions of his songs, to celebrate France's World Cup victory and the nation's national day. On stage, Jarre was joined by DJs, musicians and dancers and offered what was possibly the world's first remix-concert.
